Fostering a Culture of Care: Introducing the Insight Series and Learning Modules for Abuse and Neglect
April 7, 2025
Today, we are releasing the first issue of the Insight Series, a resource that provides sector-wide data about common areas of non-compliance impacting resident safety and wellbeing. Licensees and operators can leverage this information to inform, review, intervene and strengthen their practices for the benefit of their home and the residents they serve.
Using inspection data from across the sector, this report provides an overview of key compliance trends that impact resident safety and wellbeing. With abuse and neglect as the first topic of focus, the report provides factors to consider in meeting legislative requirements, important takeaways, and questions that you can ask yourself to support compliance and uphold resident safety.
To complement the Insight Series, we have developed four situation-based learning modules that focus on protection from abuse and prevention of neglect. The four modules are:
- Physical Abuse and Sexual Abuse (20 minutes)
- Verbal Abuse and Emotional Abuse (20 minutes)
- Financial Abuse (15 minutes)
- Neglect (20 minutes)
We encourage you to explore the modules to deepen your knowledge of the various types of abuse and neglect. These modules can also serve as a resource to guide and support others at your home, including managers, staff and volunteers. Some opportunities to consider are:
- Working through the modules as part of a management meeting or a series of meetings.
- Sharing the modules with front-line staff.
- Using the scenarios and knowledge checks to foster thoughtful discussions at team meetings.
We recognize the dedication of licensees, operators, managers and staff who support and care for seniors across the province. We trust that the Insight Series and associated learning modules will support you in this effort.
We look forward to working with you proactively and collaboratively. Should you have any questions, please connect with our Licensee Engagement and Support team by emailing info@rhra.ca.
